Calico aka Christian Lappalainen was born in the early 70s. His first taste of music came from new wave bands such as Depeche Mode and Duran Duran. By the late 80s he was a radio DJ and progressed to clubs in the mid 90s.
His debut release as a producer was Unfinished Diary – Chapter One, the first release on the legendary Swedish label Svek. Since then he has released music on labels such as Deep Touch, Lace, Selekta and Audio Beyond. Calico has collaborated on releases with DJ Mourad, Fredrik Stark, Pawel Kobak and Manuel Perez, and remixed the likes of Robert Miles, Covenant and Riviera.
With WMWL he has released the acclaimed Acid på Svenska which is a unique re-work of some Swedish folksongs into Acid House. In 1964 Jan Johansson, the legendary Swedish Jazz Composer, made an equally legendary recording of some of the most famous Swedish Folk Songs, titled “Jazz på Svenska”.
This record has become stuff of legend and myth, and influenced many musicians and is found in almost every Swedish home, but also gained international acclaim.
In 2015, almost 50 years after Jazz på Svenska, the Swedish producer Christian Lappalainen, aka Calico, made an acid remix of all these classical folksongs, with a new twist.
Keeping the original melodies and harmonies intact, he has infused them in a Roland TB303 acid bath, and the result is simply amazing!
